The Family Grant: One Evidentiary Record, Many Models

The economics of Conditional Approval changed the day the first product-family grant published. Until then, each model was a filing, each filing was a review cycle, and a manufacturer with a twelve-model line faced a queue measured in years. The family grant collapses that arithmetic — if, and only if, the evidentiary core is built to carry it.

Why the agencies prefer it too

A family grant is not a concession. It is efficiency on both sides of the table. The questions that decide an application — ownership, supply chain, manufacturing plan — are questions about the company, not the SKU. Once a reviewer has satisfied themselves on the corporate record, extending the answer across sibling models with common architecture costs little.

The drift is documented, and it accelerated across the summer. Calix went from a single router model granted May 6, to a five-model list June 1, to a grant covering its GigaSpire and Giga Pro lines as whole classes on July 24. Sagemcom converted a five-model June grant into a "FAST Broadband Class" the same week. SpaceX's grant reads, in its entirety, "Starlink routers." On the UAS side, Air6 carried a seven-model line through on one record, and Mobilicom's grant covers a platform series plus its controllers and security software. Three months of register history, one direction of travel.

What qualifies a family

Shared platform architecture, shared component provenance, shared manufacturing footprint. Where models diverge — a different radio module, a different tier-two supplier — the divergence must be disclosed and bounded, not discovered. A family filing that a reviewer has to disassemble into exceptions is worse than three clean single filings.

The staging strategy

The strongest pattern we see: file the flagship models as the core, with the record structured so that later models join by supplement rather than by new application. The line evolves; the record extends. For a manufacturer refreshing SKUs annually, this is the difference between a regulatory program and a recurring emergency.
